This was the first ever meeting in the FA Cup for City and Villa. In front of a Hyde Road crowd of 22,000 prolific scorer Jimmy Ross put City in the lead after being put through by Gillespie in the fifth minute. After the interval Villa’s Devey earned the visitors a replay by scoring the equaliser.
