GEORGE BEST IN FORM FOR UNITED
Age has dulled the reflexes but not the mannerisms and method of Manchester United’s European Cup winning team who beat Manchester City 4-3 in Mike Summerbee’s testimonial match at Maine Road last night.
Stiles tackled hard and inevitably the first free kick of the match was awarded against him in the 37th minute. By that time United were two ahead after Best, easily the best player on view came out of a sliding tackle on barrett with the ball at his feet after 10 minutes. He found Morgan who hit Corrigan with his first shot and the back of the net with the rebound.
Seven minutes later, Charlton, with a long diagonal pass, placed the ball at Crerand’s feet and from 22 yards he sent a left foot drive into the far corner. Three goals in the second half within two minutes kept competitive spirit alive. Leman scored for City (69 minutes), Lee equalised, and Charlton put United back ahead. Summerbee persevered for an equalising goal but that came from a Lee Penalty after Foulkes, who had earlier put Doyle out of the game, had handled in the 82nd minute. The final touch came from Best who beat four men in the penalty box and scored the winner in the last minute. From THE GUARDIAN 3rd September 1975
