PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 6TH DECEMBER 1973 Slimline Rodney Marsh delighted Ron Saunders with his first Manchester City hat-trick. Without detracting from City's conquering 4-1 League Cup win, the result must be put into perspective in that it was gained at the expense of a Third Division side. York City battled valiantly in the first half of the fourth round replay before a disappointing 17,972 Maine Road crowd, but were swamped after the interval when the Blues got into their stride. ... Marsh was exceptional on a night when newcomer Saunders was showing his face to City fans for the first time. ... Marsh has certainly benefited from the extra training advised by Saunders. Now I would like to see the same effort and determination put in at West Ham on Saturday...
