PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS Consider the facts behind the scoreline before decrying Manchester City's sluggish performance against Newcastle at Maine Road. Without key defenders Tony Book and Tommy Booth they had world-class forwards in Francis Lee and Colin Bell looking far from fit. Mike Doyle, like Bell and skipper Book, were also suffering from the mystery bug that has struck the Blues, and a fresh assessment of the circumstances makes a 1-1 draw seem a highly satisfactory result.

City still contrived to provide the most skillful player on the park in Freddie Hill whose brilliant performance was crowned with a match-saving effort 15 minutes from the end. Bell and Doyle, despite their sickness, combined to add the finishing touches with Doyle powering a fearsome headed goal to wipe out David Ford's effort in the 61st minute. Joe Corrigan must shoulder the criticism for that one. He could have left it to Doyle to deal with Wyn Davies, but instead he uneccessarily chased from line to hinder his own defender and the ball ran loose to Ford. The City goalkeeper had earlier saved a 39th minute penalty in a fascinating game where Newcastle revealed themselves as highly competent opponents...
