GARY OWEN SCORES CITY'S CONSOLATION GOAL

JOHN MADDOCKS WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 12TH NOVEMBER 1988 Colin Bell's first League appearance of the season couldn't stop the Blues going down 1-2 to Derby County, but the man who must have impressed an AC Milan “spy” at the game was the Rams’ ‘keeper, John Middleton. City's approach work was excellent in the first half, further cause for Italian concem, but Middleton was determined to destroy recent criticism of his form by stopping "certain" goal attempts from Booth, Barnes, Channon and Kidd, all before the break. Derby also had the temerity to score twice in this period. They went ahead through Duncan after 18 minutes, then six minutes before the interval Daly beat Corrigan with a penalty after Donachie had floored ex-Blue Steve Carter. Channon, Owen and Hartford were also foiled by Middleton in the second half, but the Blues got a consolation goal in the 58th minute via an Owen penalty The Derby ‘keeper even got a hand to this.
