 .

An exciting match at Maine Road was about great attacking play, especially Colin Bell for City and Peter Osgood for Chelsea, and poor defensive play, especially from both goalkeepers, Joe Corrigan and Peter Bonetti, All five goals came in just a fourteen minute spell early in the second half. Tony Towers, having a fine game, opened the scoring with a shot that Bonetti should have saved. A minute later the Chelsea custodian was at fault again as he dropped a Summerbee cross into the path of Francis Lee, who poked home the first of his two goals. Joe Corrigan was next to show his inconsistency a few minutes later as he flapped at a Collins corner, Osgood took advantage of the stray ball driving in a shot which Baldwin diverted into the City net. Less than ten minutes later Rodney Marsh was brought down in the box by David Webb and Francis Lee smashed home the penalty to make it 3-1, and although Baldwin scored a minute later, City held on for the victory.
