PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 6TH DECEMBER 1973
Slimline Rodney Marsh delighted Ron Saunders with his first Manchester City hat-trick.
Without detracting from City’s conquering 4-1 League Cup win, the result must be put into perspective in that it was gained at the expense of a Third Division side.
York City battled valiantly in the first half of the fourth round replay before a disappointing 17,972 Maine Road crowd, but were swamped after the interval when the Blues got into their stride.
… Marsh was exceptional on a night when newcomer Saunders was showing his face to City fans for the first time.
… Marsh has certainly benefited from the extra training advised by Saunders. Now I would like to see the same effort and determination put in at West Ham on Saturday…
Nostalgia reigns as I read the wonderful eulogies for The King.
I’m 80 now and – like all fanatical blues – enjoying our wonderful years since AD takeover, especially under Pep. We have watched and still watching incredible talent playing for “The noisy neighbours”.
However, The death of Col reminds me that we all stood in awe on the terraces watching our brilliant footballer. Mainly under Big Mal & Joe.
What more pleasure and success would Col and gang ( buzzer) have brought us but for that knee.
RIP
