MATCH REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY LIFE 17TH SEPTEMBER 1989
John Fashanu scored his first goal of the season And it was enough to give Wimbledon their first victory of the new campaign in the bottom of the table clash with Manchester City at Plough Lane.
Wimbledon had far more of the play but apart from Dennis Wise, a constant threat with his crosses and free kicks they had few ideas.
City playing without injured £1 million striker, Clive Allen, So little of the ball until the closing stages and were punchless in front of goal.
Fashanu scored the only goal with a close range header after 35 minutes from a centre from Wise but it was a rare moment of excitement.
Wimbledon manager Bobby Gould, admitting his team’s victory was not notable for the quality of the football said: “We were desperate for a win.” He added: “It was our first win of the season and it’s nice to get one under your belt. We have played better and my heart was in my mouth When Brian Gayle missed a good chance for City just before the end. that time Lady Luck smiled on us.” He added: “John’s goal was magnificent, a typical centre forward goal, a super cross and a super finish. I know it’s not a pretty victory but it was a victory and that is what the game is all about today, winning.”
