Sir Alf Ramsey was in the crowd on a warm sunny Autumn afternoon with a mind to ensure he had was sure who to name in his England squad for the trip to play Switzerland next week and Mike Summerbee made sure the England manager would hopefully re-ignite his international career with a scintillating display.
He was the catalyst which set up City’s first away win of the season setting up both goals before the quarter hour mark. Franny Lee put the Blues ahead after 11 minutes from a pass from Summerbee and then just three minutes later ‘Buzzer’ slipped the ball through to Dave Conner who volleyed into the Baggies’ net to make it 2-0. City always seemed the slicker side and Summerbee nearly crowned the perfect performance as he combined well with Wyn Davies to send in a glorious drive which slammed against The Baggies’ crossbar.
West Brom went on to make a few good chances with Doyle, Book and Booth making last gasp clearances as well as Joe Corrigan making excellent saves, indeed Joe Mercer summed up the big man’s continued improvement commenting “The boy’s having a great season and we have every confidence in him now”.
