TWO GREAT GOALS FROM RODNEY MARSH

tottenham home 1972 to 73 2nd marsh goal

After a great performance, midweek against Valencia, Rodney Marsh once again was the shining light in what was otherwise a match that certainly won’t be remembered as a classic.
Derek Wallis writing in the Daily Mirror summed it up “Spurs will win nothing this season unless they show more ambition in away games. Neither will they excite audiences with their cynical attempts to stop the opposition playing… Spurs can be accused, and fairly so, of destroying the game and City of being willing accomplices.”
The first half was strewn with missed chances, Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee headed over when they should have scored and Martin Peters also missed a good chance with a shot over the bar. It was left to Marsh just before half-time to break the deadlock. Towers, fed the ball out left to Donachie 18 yards out, he jinked inside the full back and knocked in a cross with his weaker right foot. Doyle, stood on the penalty spot, killed the ball beautifully with one touch into the path of Marsh, who cracked in a great shot to beat Jennings.
Both teams came out in the second half showing a bit more urgency, and it was Spurs who scored next. Martin Peters heading in the equaliser from a Pearce corner.
It was left to Marsh four minutes from time to seal both points for the Blues. Francis Lee picked the ball up about thirty yards out, he hit a bit of a ‘daisy cutter’ through a crowd of players, Jennings, seemingly unsighted, dived late but was relieved to see the ball hit the post, however, Marsh was more alert than any Spurs’ defender and pounced to hit the rebound in from three yards.
