PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 15TH MAY 1981
Manchester City today returned home empty handed but with heads held high after featuring in oneof the most memorabe FA Cup Finals of modern times.
Now manager John Bond must spend the summer break rebuilding the shattered dreams and ambitions of a club who twice came agonisingly close to victory.
His first requirement is to find what City lacked most in a breathtaking defeat at the hands of a more talented Tottenham last night, class and quality…
City took defeat in the maner of the sporting club they are. The champagne flowed with the tears although the mood was best summed up by skipper Paul Power when he said: “It’s better to have been there and lost than never to have been there at all.”
And from Bond came the supreme accolade with this tribute to his men: “You have done me, you have done Manchester City and most important pf all, you have done yourselves proud. You gave me everything, I couldn’t ask for more.”…
FROM ROY OF THE ROVERS
Hi there, great post, even if it wasn’t the result we wanted that day….
Don’t suppose you know what issue of Roy of the Rovers those great goals came from? I used to own those copies and I’d love to try and track them down again if i can.
Thanks for all the work on the site, I know it must take a lot of time and effort to put it all together, it’s much appreciated.
Best wishes from Down Under.
