FROM A JOHN MADDOCKS ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 30TH SEPTEMBER 1989
City’s next home opponents in the League Cup were Sunderland, who contributed to an exciting game, even if at times the tempo was too hectic for flowing football. It ended in a 1-1 draw.
The respective ‘keepers, Corrigan and Siddall, took the eye in the first half as they both saved well and then the visitors took the lead 5 minutes after the break. Whitworth’s free-kick was cleared only as far as ex-Blue Clarke, and from his cross, Chisholm was allowed to head unchallenged at goal. Corrigan parried his first effort but was unable to stop the second.
It took only 3 minutes for us to equalise. Lee elected to pass back to Siddall but instead found the lurking Robinson who scored from a narrow angle. Bennett had a couple of chances but delayed too long, while at the other end Paul Futcher had a blinder; a good job because Caton was having a stinker!
