OWEN SPOILS IT FOR CITY
GARY OWEN IS SENT OFF
DEREK POTTER WRITING IN THE DAILY EXPRESS 2ND NOVEMBER 1978
Staunch defence and cool heads saw Manchester City hold out safely for a 4-2 win on aggregate in the UEFA Cup in Liege.
But with only four minutes left, the short fuse of Gary Owen snapped.
Asa Hartford was blatantly brought down and Owen raced 25 yards, aimed a high kick at a Belgian and was sent off by Austrian referee Frans Woehrer.
It was not Owen’s night. Had he snapped up a Mike Channon chance in the seventh minute as he should it would have been all over, with Liege chasing the impossible task of scoring six.
Most Liege pressure and then two second half goals came from elegant icelander Asgeir Sigurvinsson, on a penalty when Hartford handled.
City manager Tony Book’s delight was marred only by the sending off, for Owen now misses the next round which sees City in the last 16.
