BRIAN KIDD GRABS CITY’S 3RD GOAL
JOHN MADDOCKS WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 22ND OCTOBER 1988
Standard Liege were the visitors for the UEFA Cup game, leaving dispiritedly on the wrong end of a 4-0 thrashing. Asa Hartford opened the Blues‘ account with a 12th minute header, but for long periods it seemed as though weak finishing might be their downfall. Colin Bell, in his first match that season, Barnes, Palmer and Kidd were all narrowly off target, and Liege began to put Corrigan under testing pressure, Renquin, Graf and Wellens putting the big man through his paces.
Then Barnes stepped up several gears and the Belgian challenge evaporated. Having set up the first goal, Barnes centred to Watson whose header was handled by Poel. Kidd smashed home the penalty and then made it 3-0 a minute later with a smart header after Barnes had destroyed the right flank. Peter then crossed over and provided the centre for Palmer to knock the ball in, for No. 4.
