Having only won two of their 21 League games away from Maine Road last season I’m sure Tony Book was looking to start the pre-season programme with a win over Southampton at Ibrox in their first match of the Tennents Caledonian Cup.
As it turned out the so called lottery of a penalty shoot-out was not as much of a lottery as to the way the tie was decided.
During the 90 minutes The Saints were by far the better side in the first half and deserved to go ahead when Pat Earles scored from an 18th minute Bobby Stokes’ corner.
Paul Power’s introduction at half time energised the Blues and it was his cross on the hour that set up Dennis Tueart to head in City’s equaliser.
With the full-time score 1-1 the result was supposedly to be decided on penalties, however with the sides both converting 11 spot kicks, the referee called the managers to the centre spot to advise that the result would be decided on the toss of a coin. sadly for Tony Book and City, Lawrie McMenemy was the lucky one and Southampton were the winners.
