Manchester City became even more entrenched at the foot of Division 1 when they crashed to Southampton at Maine Road.
City started well enough with Paul Stewart putting them in front with a header in the 28th minute, his first goal since his £200,000 move from Blackpool.
But two minutes from half-time Gordon Hobson equalised and a soft goal from Danny Wallace put them in front after 52 minutes. Hobson went on to complete a hat-trick.
Two minutes from time Paul Moulden pulled a goal back.
