FROM AN ATICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 10TH DECEMBER 1988
… Southampton came north and returned with both points, winning 2-1. Manager Tony Book criticised his team for their “cloud-nine” approach to the game.
Viljoen was the culprit for the Saints’ opening goal in the 35th minute. He collected a Peach centre and unaccountably blasted it past Corrigan for a dreadful own goal. Three minutes after half-time Boyer almost knelt to head home a Holmes centre. Owen came on for Kidd and City looked better, but all they could manage was a goal by Power who hit home a rebounding Barnes effort.
