Manchester City striker Rodney Marsh, his hair still dripping from the bath, told me: Everything I’ve said came true!”
On TV, less than twenty four hours earlier, Marsh shocked millions with his forecast of England’s Soccer suicide, warning that football in this country could be almost non-existent in ten years time.
Well if this ugly, shoddy shambles is any yardstick, Marsh is bang on target.
For this was a bitter, bruising apology of a match, riddled with scores of fouls, free kicks, injury stoppages, and four bookings.
After a comparatively calm first half, it suddenly erupted into one of the most savage displays seen on any ground this season.

City’s Summerbee, in the 33rd minute, was the first player to have his name taken, his fourth booking in four successive League matches.
From that moment the pattern was set, fouls galore, hacking, slashing tackles, and frayed tempers running riot.
Southampton’s Byrne and City’s Bell also had their names taken before the interval and, 90 seconds before the merciful end of a nightmare that’s best forgotten, Southampton’s O’Neill went into the book too.
Yet some soccer sanity did come from City’s 18 year old debut-making Leman, who had a big hand in Marsh’s 40th minute goal.
Four minutes later. the Saints, who certainly weren’t wearing any haloes, equalised through Channon.
