City started brightly on a pitch that could only be described as a bog which got worse and worse in an endless downpour at The Dell
Former Saint Graham Baker hit the Southampton post in the first minute and City were probably slightly the better side when Southampton scored after 15 minutes.
There wasn’t much chance in the mud to show any genuine skill and at half-toime City were still the better side, albeit 1-0 down.
After the break the mud played a part in Southampton’s second goal, Danny Wallace helped a free kick into the area and the ball appered to be heading for the hands of big Joe Corrigan, but it stook in the mud and Steve Moran managed to pip the City custodian to the ball to make it 2-0 to the South Coast outfit.
Substitute Puckett added a third and Holmes made it 4-0 with a spectacular chip over Joe Corrigan.
