REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 1ST NOVEMBER 1986
Southampton dominated the early stages against Manchester City and went ahead through Northern Ireland’s striker Colin Clarke after 16 minutes.
Clarke had already gone close three times, being just off target with a glancing header and a looping lob before having a home shot blocked by McCarthy.
But in the 16th minute, he latched on to a pass from Cockerill and left both McCarthy and goalkeeper Suckling sprawling before cracking home his 12th goal of the season.
But City hit back strongly, with Grealish having a shot pushed over the bar by Shilton, and White seeing a header blocked on the line by Dennis.
But there was still plenty of sting in the Southampton attack, and from a corner by Case, Cockerill was only just off target.
After the break City’s Graham Baker headed an 83rd minute equaliser against his old club after Glenn Cockerill missed a 57th minute penalty.
