FROM AN ARTICLE WRITTEN BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 1ST MARCH 1989
Shrewsbury Town came to Maine Road looking for revenge following our 3-1 win at Gay Meadow the previous November, while the City line-up showed several changes from the previous Saturday at Middlesbrough.
It was a game that had casual attenders wondering how on earth City were up there as promotion contenders. Very few chances were created up front; the midfield appeared to be strangers to each other; and the defence, Alex Williams excluded, was far from the sort needed to guarantee a comfortable ride into the First Division. Alex made one astounding save from Stevens who headed in from six yards, forcing the City ‘keeper to hurl himself backwards to tip the ball away. On other occasions it was good luck rather than good management that prevented the Shropshire club from taking a lead that might enable them to gain their first ever win at Maine Road.
McNally hit a venomous shot which beat Williams and then ricochetted off the bar into the crowd, then Brown hit a post, the ball arriving at Petts a yard off the goal-line. He was so dumbfounded he could only stand and stare as the ball was whipped off his toes.
Dalziel replaced Tolrnie at half-time, bringing more life into the attack and it was his header that was cleared off the line by Griffin.
The natives were getting very restless when Reid
saved the day. With 6 minutes left Nicky sent a looping header over the flailing arms of Ogrizovic to grab 3 precious points, just as he had done against Portsmouth a month earlier.
