This victory maintained the Owls` charge towards European qualification as they overturned City to register a third win of the season against the Manchester side, having earlier won the league meeting at Maine Road and a ZDS Cup tie at Hillsborough. Nigel Pearson saw a first-half header tipped onto the crossbar and David Hirst hit a post less than a minute later. But Hirst was not to be denied, turning onto Carlton Palmer’s pass in his own half and outpacing the City defence before shooting in on 56 minutes. Nigel Worthington rounded off the victory with a low volley from Roland Nilsson’s hanging cross three minutes from time.
