A fierce row broke out last night after Manchester City reached the League Cup final over a tackle on Francis Lee, who was carried off with serious ligament damage to his left knee.
It was a tackle that could cost Lee his place in the final on March 2nd.
Plymouth’s Colin Sullivan was booked by referee Gordon Hill in the 70th minute and City manager Ron Saunders said, “He could have broken Lee’s leg. It was a dreadful tackle. He never even played the ball.”
But Argyle boss Tony Walters hit back angrily: “It was a magnificently timed tackle. Colin played the ball perfectly. Why the referee booked him only he knows. I could see nothing wrong with it. If this is the attitude to normal physical contact we had better take up playing netball.”
Lee said: “If the player had played the ball I would have been alright.”
Lee had given City the lead in the 8th minute with a magnificent effort, and he made the second goal for Colin Bell which clinched the Wembley place after 48 minutes.
