PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 6TH MAY 1982
Loyal, but long-suffering fans won’t get carried away with Manchester City’s first home win in almost three months, and skipper Paul Power’s only goal since his stunning FA Cup clincher more than a year ago.
The writing is already on the soon-to-be-renovated Maine Road walls, with a drastically reduced attendance for last night’s 1-0 victory over Notts County in an insignificant match.
Success will neither boost Saturday’s gate for the final home fixture against Coventry, nor sell many more season tickets to supporters whose patience has been sorely tried these painful past few months.
… City’s latest performance again smacked of total indifference, the apparent over-riding factor being the need to complete the 42 scheduled matches.
County could have virtually wrapped up the points in the first half hour when they and Joe Corrigan were at their best.
The Blues’ bold and brave goalkeeper once more salvaged his side with two superb saves in a period when the passing of his outfield colleagues was atrocious.
City improved after the break, mainly because the opposition faded. And Power, in probably his best game of the season, broke the deadlock after 74 minutes bursting through to score with a scorching 20 yard left footer.
Nicky Reid was again the outstanding player with rare flashes from Asa Hartford and Phil Boyer who was desperately unlucky with a third miinute header, well saved by Raddy Avramovic.
