With the match at Forest coming just two days after City’s FA Cup semi-final win at Villa Park, it was clear Mercer and Allison were putting all their egg into the FA Cup basket as they made five changes to the side which had sealed their Wembley visit.
The first half was very even with few chances from either side, however after the break Forest drove forward and it was left to young Joe Corrigan, making only his second league appearance, to keep the Citizens in the game. He made three good saves, one a spectacular stop from Newton, however with a quarter of an hour left he was unable to stop another fantastic shot from Newton which grabbed both points for Forest.
The match was also notable for young Chris Glennon’s debut who came on for City as a second half substitute.
