NEIL YOUNG SCORES A GREAT GOAL TO PUT CITY 1-0 UP

BIRMINGHAM DAILY POST

A brilliantly taken goal by Manchester City forward Bobby Owen after 69 minutes, ended Newcastle’s hopes… just when they seemed to have taken control of the game at Maine Road.
City were in command throughout the first half but had only one goal to show for their efforts and lost the initiative after the interval.
But with more than an hour gone, Owen stumbled after a tackle from Clark, kept his balance and surged forward to hit a great shot past McFaul. This knocked much of the spirit out of Newcastle who had tried so hard to cancel out Neil Young’s sixth minute goal for City… a clever overhead kick by Owen sent inside left Neil Young clear from halfway and he gave the advancing McFaul no chance.
City always looked dangerous when they broke, but Newcastle’s outside right Dyson missed a great chance to equalise when he shot weakly after being played onside by Oakes.
The first half undoubtedly belonged to City. They varied their attacks intelligently and Lee, who had a brilliant game, was twice unlucky not to score.
First he saw a fierce volley stopped by Craggs on the line, and soon afterwards drove a free kick through a wall of players against the foot of a post. Owen should have scored from the rebound, but shot over.

…We had another crack at them at Maine Road four days later. There was an even bigger gate for this one; almost 61,000 Saw us dominate the first half but we only had an early goal from Neil Young to show for it. A Bobby Owen overhead kick had sent Neil clear, and he tucked it away. So, we still had a lot to do, especially as we had to overcome the loss of Mike Summerbee, who was sent off.
I played well and had one shot cleared off the line and then I hit a free kick beyond the wall, but it bounced off the post. Newcastle roared back at us after the break but a well-taken goal by Bobby Owen, 20 minutes from time, saw us safely into the next round.

  1. Neil Young scored one of the best volleyed goals I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately no video recording and can’t find the centre page newspaper photo in the next days paper. And 60,000 plus at Maine Road. No fans you know !!!!!
