From NEDUM ONUOHA, KICKING BACK… I was standing directly behind it.
The ball was just to the right of centre for a free kick more than 30 yards out. Newcastle goakeeper Shay Given had set his wall up to protect the goal to his left hand side.
That was the way most would go. Try to whip it over the wall. No point going to the keeper’s side from this distance because shay had it covered.
H-h-h-h-hold on a second, he’d gone keeper’s side.
The ball never rose above the crossbar as it flew into the top corner. i watched it all the way. Then I ran over to the corner where Elano had slid to his knees in celebration and turned to Martin Petrov, who had arrived just before me.
“Oh my God”i mouthed, giving him a condspiratorial side eye glance. The keeper had been set, the wall had been set, but the ball…. uh-uh.
Absolutely outrageous. Without doubt one of the best goals I’ve ever seen.
