Manchester City have been at Home in their last three League games, and last night at Maine Road they completed a hat trick of victories in them when they beat Newcastle United 2-0. When Newcastle abandoned negative defence in the second half. City were able to continue in the manner of their victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
ln their three successful matches City have scored eight goals and conceded only two, and their speed is disconcerting some impressive defences. Last night Young, even though he missed a penafiy, was in splendid form, looking even more talented than Bell. The reputation of lley alone of the Newcastle defenders survived this match.
The early football was not in the recent tradition of either team. A lot of tanged play in midfield was perhaps caused by a heavy downpour which evidently made the ball difficult to control. As the half progressed play shifted more into the Newcastle half where it developed as a struggle between Newcastle’s dour detence and City’s often frustrated forwards.
Burton’s distribution from right back for Newcastle seemed unimpaired by the weather, and he created his sIde’s only dangerous attack of the half with a high centre into the goalmouth. Davies nearly bundled Dowd into goal with the ball. Cltv took command until shortly before the interval.
In compensation for two or three moves which nearly paid off, they went ahead in the 33rd minute when Marshall, in trying to cut out a centre from Oakes lost control of the ball. Hince always cutting in from the wing in the hope of picking up such gifts as this, hooked the ball away from the goalkeeper and drove it home.
Soon afterwards a centre from the left wing by Coleman swerved, hitting the Newcastle crossbar. Only in the closing minutes of the half did Newcastle reassert themselves, a shot from Bennett going across the face of City’s goal.
newcastle home 1967-68 action
The game was transformed in the second half by Newcastle’s need to score. Open football became the order of the day and this, in their present mood could only be in City’s favour. Shots from Summerbee, Coleman, and Oakes in turn went no more than a yard over the crossbar
Newcastle broke away in fast runs that seemed to be inspired by desperationmore than anything else. And when a chance did present itself, Heslop making one of his rare mispasses in front of goal, Robson shot wide from two or three yards.
City’s fast sustained running had the Newcastle defence almost bewildered, and it was hardly surprising that Marshall was not very alert early in the second half when a superb drive from Young, 30 yards out on the left wing, crashed into the goal. adding to City’s lead.
Although City had by now clearly more of the play, Newcastle were often unlucky near goal, and Robson again missed a chance, his header beating Dowd but: hitting the far post. Coleman too was slow in front of goal for City when Marshall took the ball from his feet after a splendid centre had come across low from Bell. Soon afterwards Coleman won a penalty when brought down by McGrath, but Young’s penalty shot went well wide.
