RODNEY MARSH EQUALISES TO MAKE IT 1-1
PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 30TH NOVEMBER 1974
City fought magnificently at St James’ Park where they were desperately unlucky to go behind 13 minutes from the end of a see-saw struggle.
MacDonald finally escaped the clutches of Doyle, who had an outstanding game, to head Newcastle back into the lead after the battling Blues had equalised in the first half, where they finished well on top.
The defence was again made to soak up enormous punishment, with the dependable Oakes once more giving Doyle tremendous support in the middle of the back four.
The midfield effort from Bell and Hartford was first class, with Henson also looking good in patches.
The front line, however lacked firing power at times, but their all-round spirit and endeavour must be commended as City made determined efforts to allay that away bogey.
But once more the Blues were out of luck and finally fell to an undeserved defeat.
