Manchester City team-mates Mike Doyle and Tony Towers began fighting each other after a fantastic penalty clanger.
It happened the 35th minute when Doyle needlessly handled a Smith centre.
Towers was so incensed he raced angrily at Doyle and there was a brief skirmish before they were parted and MacDonald scored from the spot and helped Newcastle clinch a win.
The Maine Road men, with Bell outstanding, were magnificent in every move and went into the lead after 22 minutes with a dynamic goal from Mellor.
Their final agony came in the 50th minute when for the first time MacDonald escaped the clutches of Jeffries to cross hard and low from the left and Barrowclough scored
