REPORT FROM THE BELFAST TELEGRAPH 22ND MAY 1980
Giorgio Chinaglia scored two opportunist goals last night to lead the New York Cosmos to a 3-2 victory over Manchester City in the opening match in the Transatlantic Challenge Cup in New Jersey.
Chinaglia, the most prolific goal scorer in the history of the North American Soccer League, gave the Cosmos a 1-0 half-time lead and netted the winner after the English First Division club had levelled the score in the second half.
Manchester City were generally in charge in the first half, but sloppy passing around the penalty area cost them goal-scoring possibilities.
