In the league we travelled to Millwall with the unusual sight of an empty away end, the two clubs having agreed to ban away support for this fixture.
I had become used to the way Millwall fans behaved, but that night SWP and I received the kind of racial abuse that was sickening even for them.
It was not nearly as scary as it had been in the past and I warmed up with a smile on my face, even though one thug in particular, for give the pun, was trying to get my goat, but failing of course.
The Millwall fans shouted abuse, despite there being one or two black faces among the home support, it was a bizarre situation: and I wondered how these people could attend the games there when racism was so rife.
I still felt that the club should be shut down, but as that was unlikely to ever happen, my only answer was to score against them.
Huckerby’s celebration was inspired, he ran to the empty stands and applauded, his hands above his head, and Shaun and I joined him doing the same thing and loved it. Better still Wrighty later scored a cracker, his first goal for the club, to complete a 3-2 win, and a very enjoyable night’s work
