DEYNA SCORES AND WINS THE GAME FOR THE BLUES
FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 22ND OCTOBER 1989
Boro could have gone in front after 35 minutes. An intricate 4-man move set Burns on his way to goal, and the Blues had Corrigan to thank as Joe raced out to dive and block Burns’ shot. At the other end, Shinton should have done better than to hit the advert board with a left-footer, and ‘keeper Platt did well to grasp a Robinson header, when the burly striker followed up a Deyna shot from 30 yards that came back off the bar. Yet all the sterling work done by Boro defenders Ashcroft, Andrew and Bailey came to nought with just 60 seconds left. Paul Futcher crossed,
Robinson flicked on, and Deyna nodded downwards to beat Platt with the winning goal.
And the Pole was the match winner again on the Saturday as he scored his 9th goal in 11 appearances. Two minutes after the break, he clinched the points to put the Blues in the top half of the table.
