REPORT FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 19TH MAY 1980
Manchester City struck a winning note for their summer tour of North America, but only with the help of a penalty shoot-out.
Tommy Booth headed the Blues into the lead in their opening game against Memphis, but the American team equalised just before the end.
The game was settled in a shoot-out, with Booth and Micky Reid, City’s successful strikers.
Said manager Tony Book: “It was an exciting finish, and the American version calls for a lot more skill than straight penalties. Over here, a shoot-out player starts from 35 yards out and has five seconds to score.”
