Article from The City programme 27th April 2003
…The game ended in a 2-0 victory with goals from top scorer George Smith and future City manager Les McDowell. but the real importance of this fixture was that it secured the title. The victory ensured that no side could catch the Blues. It was a marvellous achievement for new City manager and former captain Sam Cowan. but sadly Cowan was not to see his side blossom in Division One as there were clashes behind the scenes.
Cowan le? the Blues shortly after the season ended and told the press: “l don’t think I got a fair crack of the whip. All I can say is I was unhappy and had no alternative but to tender my resignation. l am terribly sorry to have to leave behind a very fine set of boys and a good sporting public. My quarrel is not with the players
l have made no future plans l never thought I should ?nd myself looking for a job in such a short time after having undrearned of success at my ?rst attempt.”
Cowan hinted that he had clashed with Chairman Bob Smith and then added: “It looks like l shall leave the club without even a thank you. But l can take credit here and now for our winning the championship. I got harmony out of discontent.”
This victory over West Ham helped City secure the Championship and capped a fine season for the pIayers and for Cowan. But it is a major shame that the success was brought to a premature end.
