Hi There I well remember this game,i was ten years old.The weather prior to the game, two days before and match day itself was atrocious. The rain never stopped,no one had heard of global warming in those days.As a young United supporter it was a big thing going to watch a Derby game.City had in their team DENIS LAW ,who was the big star of the day back then. And i have to say to watch him even then was absolutely breathtaking, i had never witnessed anybody as fast and electrifying as him.Even through all the water, mud, and puddles. You could not take eyes off him,i have to say City had the better of things for most of the game. Also joe Hayes and Ken Barnes were very impressive.I think most people were glad to get home and get dry.I well remember having to queue for ages for a bus on Wilmslow road, back home still raining very heavily for rest of the day.
Thanks Corky for taking the time out to comment on the game, it’s really appreciated
I remember this match vividly. I was 12 and being held firmly by my Grandad just behind the goal where Denis Law scored in the 4th minute. The thunder and lightening was extreme . The pitch was so drenched that everybody was splashing as they ran. I had never been so intensely absorbed in my life. I remember when they stopped to decide whether or not to stop the game, Albert Quixall took his shirt off and wrung it out so the 60,053 crowd could know what they were talking about. I also remember Bobby Charlton doing some right wing runs that were so fast I was amazed. The match was reset for March. United then won 3-1. Bah! I believe I remember the attendance correct with all due respect. Also , I belive it was abandoned after 59 mins, not 56. No! I am not a geek, but it was and still is at 71 one of the greatest football experiences of my life.
Nice to hear your story Keith. I will listen to any story that involves Denis Law, who I absolutely idolise to this day. It was great to see the word , electrifying, because that’s what Denis, was all about. One thing that seems strange, is that the game, being on the 27th August, must have been the first or second game of the season, and a derby game that early in the season, was very unusual. From August 63 to March 71, l missed a total of about 5 games at old Trafford, so I can talk about Denis, until the cows come home.I was born in May 53, so it was just before I started watching football. Well I enjoyed your story Keith, and thanks again. Phil.
We had travelled from Bury with my mates age 21 years old .What a match stood on the open terrace behind the goal.
Enthralling game it just rain rain wanted the game to end drenched but
The players give their all splashing such ball control with a pig skin ball.
Wonderful experience .
Hi Folks,
Just wondering if this programme is worth anything?
Regards
Hi Trevor
Not sure too be honest, might be worth checking ebay to see if anyone’s selling it to give you an idea
cheers
Trevor
The ‘Mini-derby’ at Old Trafford on the same day was also abandoned.
First time I had watched United, travelled up from Essex on train via Dudley where we (my brother and a friend) had stayed the night with the great Duncan Edwards parents. Mr.Edwards walked us down to see Duncan’s grave in the morning and then took us down to the railway station. We arrived in Manchester in pouring rain, caught a bus to Maine Road and watched the match which was abandoned before the hour mark ! We queued for a bus back to the station and waited what seemed hours for a train to London, arriving home shortly before midnight.
Thanks Terry for sharing a great memory of the match
What an emotional experience it must have been for you, just a couple of years after Munich, but a nice story Terry.
