COLIN BELL SCORES CITY’S FIRST AND A MARTIN BUCHAN OWN GOAL MAKES IT 2-0
.
from THE GREAT DERBY MATCHES, MANCHESTER UNITED VERSUS MANCHESTER CITY By Michael Heatley and Ian Welch
Malcolm Allison and Frank O’Farrell faced each other as managers for the first and last time in this derby
This game ended as a conclusive City win, but both teams were castigated in the press for their mean-spirited attitude which led to some rash tackles and ugly off the ball incidents. Spice was added with United’s inclusion of Wyn Davies, a very rare direct signing between the two clubs a few weeks earlier: he was being asked to link with Scot Ted MacDougall, a prolific scorer in the lower divisions but totally untried at this level.
In the event, the partnership never looked like sparking, and the introduction of Brian Kidd for Willie Morgan failed to do any better.
The goals when they came were all for City. Keeper Stepney had collided with full-back Tony Dunne to present Colin Bell with an open net after seven minutes. The City skipper went on to complete a hat-trick, though the third goal was credited to Martin Buchan, from whose deflection the ball entered the net.
