MARSH ON THE CARPET

NIGEL CLARKE WRITING IN THE DAILY MIRROR 28TH APRIL 1975
Rodney Marsh, Manchester City’s skipper faces “a rocket” this week.
Manager Tony Book was angered by Marsh’s antics when he was substituted ten minutes from time at Luton.
Marsh ignored a touchline seat with City officials and squatted on the track in front of the terraces.
Referee David Wallace asked him to go to the dressing room to avoid distracting the players.
But Marsh just peeled off his light blue jersey, threw it down and crouched down again to chat with fans and sign autographs.
It was the first time Marsh had been substituted as a City player, and only the second time in his career.
He said: “I was very, very hurt. I felt it was a token gesture and meant very little sp late in the game and in the last match of the season.
I don’t know why I was called off, but there are probably politics involved. Obviously there’s more to it, but I’m not saying any more.” Book said: “I wasn’t happy with what Rodney did. There is no question of me fining him, but I shall be speaking to him about his behaviour. I called him off for a tactical reason.”
City should have wrapped up this poor game before Luton fought back to earn a point.
After Dennis Tueart’s fine goal, Barney Daniels struck the bar and City had other chances before Jimmy Ryan equalised. Now Luton must rely on Leeds beating Tottenham tonight to stay up…
