Liverpool came to Maine Road looking to secure an early season double on City.
The first half was very even, without much incident until a minute before the break, when, under pressure from Roger Hunt, Joe Corrigan cleared the ball straight to Callaghan, when it looked easier to gather the ball to his body. Callaghan spent no time returning the ball into the area to Graham to head past the City custodian to make it 1-0.
The Blues came out in the second half looking for the equaliser and despite Bell and Lee both hitting the woodwork it was Graham scoring with another header late in the second half which clinched the points and the double over City for the Scousers
