… next stop Milan the following Wednesday, so the Anfield atmosphere was ideal preparation for the Blues’ UEFA Cup tie. The team was desperately unlucky to go down 0-1 to a highly debatable penalty decision after 86 minutes, thus spoiling Corrigan’s birthday celebrations, especially after attacking for much of the game and also losing Channon mid-way through the first half with a pulled muscle.
When Liverpool did pile on the pressure it was Corrigan who rescued City with some brilliant saves from Case, Neal and Heighway.
The game threatened to boil over towards the end, Kennedy and Souness being booked for the Reds, and Watson and Booth for City.
