Anfield’s 50,000 crowd was in carnival mood last night as Liverpool reached a peak of perfection with a world class display.
It was a performance of champions, and not even the news that Leeds had also won could diminish the belief at Anfield that the First Division title remains in reach.
Liverpool manager Bill Shankley said last night: “It isn’t finished yet, by god it isn’t. We can win all our four games. We’ve been the best team in England for four months now, and our football tonight was poetry,”
Liverpool put City on the rack with four goals in the first blistering 35 minutes.
Brian Hall scored in the 3rd minute from a move fashioned by Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway.
Hall scored his second after 11 minutes from a pass by Phil Boersma, who headed the third 5 minutes later.
City survived until the 35th minute when Colin Barrett handled Phil Thompson’s pass. But the ball escaped him and as the referee allowed the advantage, Keegan scored the 4th goal.
