No damage done this time to Mike Robinson despite another buffeting during the League match at Leeds a fortnight ago. The honours in this mid-air duel went to home ‘keeper David Harvey, just fingering the ball away from Mike’s head as Leeds full back Kevin Hird holds a watching brief.
But Mike had the cuts and bruises to show from other areas of his involvement. And it prompted him to say after the 2-1 City win:
“lT WAS LIKE THE ALAMO OUT THERE. I CANNOT REMEMBER BEING IN A MORE PHYSICAL GAME. IT WAS TOUGH IN THE THIRD DIVISION WITH PRESTON, BUT THIS WAS SOMETHING ELSE.”
Low-point of Mike’s afternoon came just on half-time when Leeds pivot Paul Hart appeared to elbow the City striker in the mouth leaving him with a swollen and cut lip to go with some heavily bruised ankles suffered in some other confrontations. It meant marching orders for Hart.
Earlier in the game Leeds defender Paul Madeley had gone to hospital for attention to a double fracture of the nose after a challenge with Mike for a mid-air ball.
“lt wasn’t deliberate” said Leeds manager Jimmy Adamson about the Madeley clash, “and Paul Hart deserved to be sent off. His was an irresponsible action and probably cost us the game” he added, thus exonerating Mike from blame in either incident.
Outcome for Mike was that he spent three days with his ankles heavily bandaged. And he was in the wars in the next game, he collected 3 stitches in a cut over his right eye following a collision of heads in the League Cup match at Sunderland.
.
Paul Madeley’s 500th league appearance. Not bad for a player without his own position.
