If you win 3-1 at Elland Road you normally have to put in a display to be proud of, however with the European Cup Winners Cup final on there mind City just seemed to be going through their paces, with only Young, Bell and Towers excelling on the day, indeed it was a poor display by an injury ravaged Leeds side that ‘helped City to this scoreline.
Paul Fitzpatrick wrote in The Guardian “The game itself barely deserves mention. For City it was a useful practice in preparation for their European Cup Winners Cup final in Vienna. For Leeds it was little more than yet another embarrassment in an overcrowded fatiguing season. Not surprisingly, the air of boredom which hung over the players soon spread to the crowd, and more than one spectator must have nodded off in the filtering spring sunshine. Not for a long time has one seen a match so pointless and irrelevant”.
City took the lead after the half hour, Alan Oakes feeding Neil Young, who smashed an unstoppable shot in off the under side of the bar.
Colin Bell scored the second from a Glyn Pardoe cross, and man of the match, Tony Towers grabbed City’s third. Belfitt scored a consolation goal for Leeds, but late on their injury worries increased as John Faulkner was stretchered off with a serious knee injury.
