CITY OUT OF THE RACE

BOB RUSSELL WRITING IN THE DAILY MIRROR 19TH APRIL 1972
Manchester City’s League title hopes crashed at Portman Road last night when they slumped 2-1 to Ipswich.
To add to their misery, striker Mike Summerbee was booked for the sixth time this season and their Welsh international, Wyn Davies, went off with a cut eye in the first half.
For a team that had little to play for, Ipswich showed plenty of enthusiasm and City were always struggling.
Davies went off after a clash of heads with Summerbee.
Summerbee, in fact, had an eventful evening. Ten minutes after the accident with Davies he was booked by referee John Homewood for dissent.
Ipswich went ahead in the 32nd minute with a goal by Trevor Whymark.
The luck which seemed to have deserted City returned in the 54th minute when Sivell failed to reach an inswinging corner for Summerbee to scramble in the equaliser.
But their luck didn’t last and Ipswich snatched the winner on the hour when left back Colin Harper made the running down the left, sent winger Mick Lambert deeper and from the cross Harper squeezed a superb header in at the near post.
