A bruising 120 minute mud bath at Maine Road failed to produce a winner from last season’s Cup Winners Cup finalists, but unearthed a new hero for the Manchester City supporters.
Ian Mellor, 21, playing in a tense European tie just four days after making his senior debut, headed City’s first goal after 41 minutes and made their second for Mick Doyle after 67 minutes… to force a 2-2 aggregate score.
Under appalling conditions of rain and mud both sides did remarkably well to stay the course.
City dominated the game but the Poles defended with strength and skill to earn a third meeting in Copenhagen next Wednesday.
