City went into the game with confidence after winning 4-2 at Craven Cottage less than two weeks before, however this time they were without cup-tied Fancis Lee and Ken Mulhearn, and after less than 15 minutes Mike Summerbee’s effect in the game was negated when he was carried off with a knee ligament injury. However by that time Fulham had virtually blown City away with a fantastic start,
After just two minutes a speculative shot by Steve Earle from all of 30 yards, should have been saved by Harry Dowd, however he seemed to lose the flight of the ball as it ended up in the back of the net,
Just eight minutes later Earle made it a brace, scoring from a headed assist from Allan Clarke.
Summerbee who was then carried off, bravely returned to play after a quarter of an hour, however his knee was heavily strapped and by half-time it was clear he couldn’t continue.
Stan Horne was Buzzer’s replacement for the second half and so Mike Doyle was moved up front, which changed the whole game in to City’s favour, and within fifteen minutes of the second half The Citizens were level.
A poor punch out from a corner by Tony Macedo in the 57th minute was headed home by Alan Oakes, then three minutes later Colin Bell equalised.
City were now pushing for victory, however in the 72nd minute Clarke surged through the middle of the City defence and although his first shot was blocked by Oakes, he collected the loose ball, beat Oakes then struck home, what was to be, the winning goal, despite a late siege on the Fulham goal City were out of the cup.
