‘ROY OF THE ROVERS’ HIGHLIGHTS BRIAN KIDD’S WINNING GOAL
PETER GARDNER’S ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL
City threw everything at Everton but were denied a netful of goals by an incredible display of goalkeeping, and a stubborn defensive display by the outplayed Merseysiders.
The Blues were in rampant mood, especially in a 20 minute spell before half-time when George Wood brought off an incredible hat-trick of saves.
After an unsure start, City got on top and rarely relaxed their grip with Kidd, Channon and Barnes all in tantalising mood.
Hartford was the midfield driving force, ably supported by Power and Bell.
Watson moved forward to support his attack and was unlucky with two blistering headers magnificently kept out by Wood during a burst of one of the best displays of attacking football at Maine Road this season.
Kidd’s 80th minute winner was just reward.
This was my first match, sat in Platt lane with my dad, grandad was in the Kippax!
My son is now the 5th generation of blue following his great-great-grandad on down
