 FREDDIE HILL GRABS HIS GOAL
everton away 1971-72 hill city 2nd goal
What a start for the Blues at a cold and blustery Goodison Park, with just 30 seconds on the clock, Tony Book swung in a high, hopeful ball into the Everton box, Francis Lee challenged Tommy Wright for the header, the Toffees defender, in stretching for the ball, clearly headed the ball into his own net.
Francis Lee, who was just one goal shy of equalling Derek Kevan’s post-war City scoring record, wheeled-away claiming the goal for himself, indeed after the game Franny was still adamant it was his goal, “just ask the rest of the team they’ll tell you I got a touch to the cross from Tony Book.” And despite the team backing him up, Mike Summerbee stating “No doubt about it, Francis was on the mark again,” the goal was quite correctly chalked up as an own goal.
After 21 minutes it looked like City could end up with hatful of goals, Freddie Hill scoring from six yards after a Francis Lee shot had been blocked.
There was to be no further genuine attempts from either side before the break, however within three minutes of the second half Everton pulled a goal back, a weak shot from Mick Lyons should have easily been saved by Joe Corrigan, however the City custodian made a feeble attempt to parry it and let the ball squirm over the line.
City quelled any further Everton comeback by containing the midfield and finishing the game strongly to hold on to their 2-1 lead.
