DAVE CONNOR PUTS CITY AHEAD BUT EVERTON EQUALISE
FROM THE PRESS BOX
….Everton’s rugged and ragged game against Manchester City at Goodison on Saturday played in an atmosphere bordering on the explosive at times.
Referee Wallace of Swindon was prepared to give verbal warnings but not to go any further than that. I thought City’s Lee and Coleman, with Everton’s Ball were very lucky not to be censured much more strongly than that.
The game became an untidy scramble, littered with incidents and strong arm tactics which only the referee can prevent in the heat of a game where success has become paramount.
Everton were a shade fortunate to get a point from the 1-1 draw, even though Ball missed his second successive penalty at Goodison. City looked the sharper, better moving team for an hour during which time they took the lead through Connor’s goal.
Everton then equalised through Hunt, who was yards offside, and the tempers heightened by Ball’s penalty miss and the injustice of Hunt’s goal began to show through very clearly.
Everton improved their general standard in the closing stages, but still lacked rhythm in attack, which was non-existent for much of the game…
