PETER GARDNER GIVES HIS ‘VERDICT’ IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL
City were again made to soak up enormous pressure as Derby, showing no signs of a European hangover.
A goal down after 11 minutes, it was an uphill fight all the way for the Blues for whom Joe Corrigan was again in outstanding form in a 1-0 defeat.
Corrigan repeatedly came to City’s rescue, particularly in a blistering first half when County were at their sharpest.
Derby constantly exposed the inexperience of Kenny Clements, who was given a hard time by the experienced home campaigners. It left Dave Watson and Mike Doyle with an added burden in covering the young right back.
City battled manfully in midfield as they staged a second-half rally, but again there was nothing going for them up front, where there was little contribution from Rodney Marsh.
